Traffic trends over the Internet indicate that the intrinsic dynamics of networks with  high link speeds , large routing tables , wireless ad hoc routing and enhancement features like QoS and overlay routing  call for architectures with increased parallelism. Parallelism of traffic in packet switched networks induces packet reordering. As network speeds increase , the amount of reordering is expected to increase. Therefore a measure of the reordering of multi-path networks i.e.,  a metric for evaluating  and characterizing end to end reordering of packets streamed over the Internet is essential.

RAT or Reordering Analysis Tool, allows the community to

· feed tcpdumps and derive the existing packet reordering in a stream of packets

· simulate reordering due to multi-path forwarding, by providing path probabilities and path characteristics (delay)

Packet reordering is measured in terms of the following metrics (refer to publications, for more information):

· RD captures the amount and degree of reordering, and can be used to define the reorder response of networks under stationary conditions.

· RBD estimates the resources  required at routers and end nodes to recover from reordering giving a measure of the network resource utilization ( buffer usage)  of a particular transmission.

· Reorder Entropy is the Shannon entropy or the measure of uncertainty of the displacement of packets from their sequenced order.
